Based on a Traditional Scottish Tune
"The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond" is a Scottish traditional. The song is about Loch Lomond, a lake that is 71 square kilometres in size, the largest in Scotland and the entire island of Great Britain. The "bonnie banks" are the loch’s characteristic, beautiful banks.
"Loch Lomond" has been interpreted by countless artists of different genres over many decades. The Austrian composer and conductor Thomas Asanger first came into contact with the melody during his student days. In addition to the large number of existing arrangements for choir, he had a version for wind orchestra in mind. His version begins with a solo presentation of the theme by English horn, alto saxophone or trumpet. Gradually, the initially delicate instrumentation grows and leads to a brilliant grandioso. LOCH LOMOND marvellously combines musical simplicity with great emotions. This makes the work the ideal repertoire for orchestras of all sizes and occasions of all kinds.
