Three Wagner Paraphrases

The Wagner paraphrases were commissioned by the Wagner Museum Bayreuth and premiered at Villa Wahnfried – Wagner's residence. Originally composed for tenor saxophone, they can be played on all kinds of saxophones. The occasion of the composition was the opening of an exhibition about "Entartete Musik", which showed, among other things, the inglorious role of Wagner's writing "The Jewish in Music" and the descendants of Wagner in National Socialism. Allegedly, Richard Wagner vehemently rejected the saxophone and everything it stood for.

The Wagner Paraphrases are three saxophonistic arrangements of Wagner's music: Walk sees doubts about the Valkyrie ride from the opera "Die Walküre", Elle is a transcription of the elegy WWV 93 and shows that Wagner's harmony could be very jazzy and Tan is based on the pilgrim's choir from the Opera Tannhäuser. Especially the harmony of the middle section of Tan develops a fascinating meditative effect.

Die Wagner-Paraphrasen entstanden im Auftrag des Wagner Museums Bayreuth und wurden in der Villa Wahnfried – Wagners Wohnhaus – uraufgeführt. Ursprünglich von Christoph Enzel für Tenorsaxophon konzipiert, können Sie auf allen Saxophonen gespielt werden. Anlass der Komposition war die Eröffnung einer Ausstellung zum Thema “Entartete Musik”, die unter anderem die unrühmliche Rolle von Wagners Schrift “Das Jüdische in der Musik” und der Nachfahren Wagners im Nationalsozialismus aufzeigte. Angeblich lehnte Richard Wagner das Saxophon und alles wofür es stand vehement ab.

Die Wagner Paraphrasen sind drei saxophonistische Vereinnahmungen von Wagners Musik: Walk säht Zweifel am Walkürenritt aus der Oper “Die Walküre”, Elle ist eine Transkription der Elegie WWV 93 und zeigt, dass Wagners Harmonik durchaus jazzig sein konnte und Tan basiert auf dem Pilgerchor aus der Oper Tannhäuser. Vor allem die Harmonik des Mittelteils von Tan entwickelt isoliert eine faszinierend meditative Wirkung.
