W. Taubert: Quatre marches brillantes op. 2 - S. Heller: Six Valses op. 152 - C. Reinecke: Drei kleine Fantasien op. 9
During the 19th century, the piano duet was one of the most popular and widely practised forms of home chamber music. Almost overwhelming lists of original duets and arrangements in music catalogues attest to the continuous efforts by composers and music publishers to satisfy a voracious public. Nearly all of them fell into oblivion, except for a few original works by the most popular composers. This wholesale dismissal of the works by less well-known romantic composers not only sadly limits the repertoire, but is also in many cases quite unjustified. All three of the composers represented in this anthology were highly regarded and important musical personalities in their time; their work spans the heyday of romantic piano music and is full of delightful, well-crafted and interesting ideas. So it's high time these composers were rediscovered to end their "solitary confinement" to the piano.
