Toshio Mashima composed this work on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Kwansei Gakuin University Wind Orchestra in Japan. The composition is based on the biblical story of Jacob, who sees a ladder reaching up to heaven in a dream. Many artists have been inspired by this story or by the symbolism associated with it. The rungs of the ladder represent the virtues and show people the right way through life.
