An example that Strauss not only stands for successful waltzes is his Annen Polka, which rang out for the first time at one of the popular "Anne festivals" in the Viennese Prater. Soon this piece began its triumphant advance around the whole world. The premiere took place on 24 July 1852.
The Annenpolka later became a drinking song (Schwipslied) as an insert for the opera A Night in Venedig. In the eleventh scene of the operetta's second act, the Duke and Annina are together on stage. The latter realizes that the alcohol has gone to her head. With the spoken words "I shouldn't have drunk so much. But I'll risk one very last glass. Who knows when I'll next be guest of a Duke," she segues into the Schwipslied: "Suddenly I feel so strange / something's prickling and tickling in my blood...I might even be a bit tipsy - but I'm not tipsy, oh no".
